Eminönü Mermer Han Survey, Restitution and Restoration Project

Cultural Heritage – Survey, Restitution and Restoration Projects

Project Summary

Survey, restitution and restoration projects for the Mermer Han building in Eminönü were prepared by Bike Architecture. The work covers the project documentation of the existing state of the structure and architectural decisions for its conservation.

In the survey phase, the existing mass of the structure, floor organisation, facade layout and openings were examined on site; existing state drawings were produced through measurements and photographs. Window openings, floor cornices, lintel details and facade proportions on the facades were transferred to the survey drawings.

In the restitution studies, assessments regarding the past state of the structure were made on the basis of existing traces and facade layout; mass proportions, facade organisation and the positions of architectural elements were addressed in the restitution projects. Data relating to the original architectural character of the structure were reflected in the drawings at this stage.

In the restoration projects, architectural interventions for the conservation of the structure were defined; facade surfaces, openings, frames and architectural details were designed in line with restoration decisions. A holistic approach was adopted, taking into account the position of the structure within the dense urban fabric and its relationship with the surroundings.

The project was prepared by Bike Architecture as a comprehensive project set covering the survey, restitution and restoration phases for the Eminönü Mermer Han building.
