Nene Hatun Kindergarten Restoration Project

Conservation of Historic Education Building – Istanbul

Project Summary

Survey, restitution and restoration projects for Nene Hatun Kindergarten were prepared by Bike Architecture. The project covers the documentation of the existing state of the historic education building named after Nene Hatun—heroine of the 1877–78 Russo-Turkish War—the conservation of its architectural character, and the design of restoration decisions compatible with its educational use.

In the survey phase, the facade layout, floor plans, load-bearing system, stairwell and interior organisation were measured on site and existing state drawings were prepared. Classroom units, shared spaces and the relationship with the outdoor area were transferred to the survey sheets. In the restitution studies, the original plan layout and period features were evaluated; in the restoration projects, the aim was to conserve the building's historic identity while ensuring child safety and compliance with current education standards.

The project is a restoration study conducted by Bike Architecture for the conservation of educational heritage and the perpetuation of the symbolic value carried by the name Nene Hatun.
